Biography
Mark R. Ensign received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from West Texas State University and earned a Diploma in Accounting from the International Accountants Society. He has been a CPA for over 30 years. He graduated from Texas Tech University School of Law as a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1989. He received numerous honors including election to the Order of the Coif (top ten percent of the law school graduating class) and Phi Kappa Phi (top ten percent of the University). He earned three American Jurisprudence Awards for highest grades in Estate Planning, Professional Responsibility (Ethics), and Legal Analysis courses.
Mr. Ensign's professional practice focuses on elder care law, those legal issues pertaining to our growing elderly population and their families. This includes elder-centered planning for the quality of life of the client, matching the level of care with the circumstances, educating, empowering and assisting family members in the care of their loved one, planning for passing estates to the next generation and reducing estate and gift taxes. He also helps clients plan for government benefits such as Medicaid. He also handles probate matters and post-mortem estate and trust administration.
Mr. Ensign has taught and lectured on topics involving geriatric care, ethics, public benefits such as Medicaid and Medicare, Elder Law and estate planning. He has taught Continuing Professional Education courses for Nurses, Social Workers, Counselors and other professional and family caregivers about various aspects of Elder Law and Geriatric Care. He has also taught Certified Public Accountants, Certified Financial Planners, and other professionals. He has also spoken to numerous professional and public organizations. His presentations have been rated highly by his audiences.
Serving this community for thirty years in various ways, Mr. Ensign is a member of the Board of Directors of the Jan Werner Adult Day Care Center serving the elderly in Amarillo and Canyon. He volunteers as Legal Counsel for the Senior Ambassadors Coalition and the Senior Ambassadors Coalition Advocates and was instrumental in the formation of these service organizations that are helping the seniors living in the Texas Panhandle. He has also served as a Potter County Commissioner, as a Texas Peace Officer in the office of Constable and as a Deputy Sheriff, currently as the Captain of the Sheriff's Reserve.
Mr. Ensign is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and the Texas Forum of NAELA. He is a Founding Member of the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys and a member of the WealthCounsel, the State Bar of Texas including the Real Estate, Trust and Probate Section and the Taxation Section. Other professional memberships include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) and the Panhandle Chapter of the TSCPA.
Mr. Ensign has been happily married to the love of his life, Joy, for 38 years. She works as the Firm Administrator and Legal Assistant. He has taught the Bible and led worship services each week for over ten years.
